Marshmallow root (Althaea officinalis) corresponds closely to the water element, which has great significance in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurvedic medicine (water = "apas").
Marshmallow root is used to promote the health of the mucosal membranes of the lungs, urinary tract, and digestive system.
Water is marshmallow root's strongest elemental connection, and marshmallow roots are very moist. The mucilaginous polysaccharides (the active constituents of the plant) can only be extracted in water - preferably cold water.
How to Make Marshmallow Root Cold Infusion
Cold infusions are best for slimy, mucilaginous herbs or herbs that contain delicate essential oils.
Add 2 Tblsp marshmallow root powder with 32 ounces of cold, filtered water in a quart jar. Cap.
For best results, allow to infuse overnight. Strain the herbs (optional) and drink.
Note: According to the Botanical Safety Handbook, 2nd edition, medications “should be taken 1 hour prior to consumption of marshmallow or several hours after consumption, as marshmallow may slow the absorption of orally administered drugs.”
A general adult dose is up to a quart of herbal infusion/decoction throughout the day.
Marshmallow root is best made into a cold infusion to preserve its mucilaginous polysaccharides
Support Gut Health
Marshmallow root powder cold infusion can be sipped throughout the day for supporting digestive health.
A study from 2010 (1) suggests that the mucilage content of marshmallow root may create a protective layer on the digestive tract lining. Marshmallow root may also stimulate the cells that support tissue regeneration.*
Promote Throat Health
Just as the mucilaginous polysaccharides in marshmallow root help to support healthy moisture levels in the mucus membranes of the gut, they can also help support moisture levels of a dry and irritated throat during allergy or cold and flu season.
UTI Support
Although compounds like D-Mannose and monolaurin are essential for UTIs (2), marshmallow root powder may aid in supporting a healthy urinary tract because of its mucilaginous and "coating" nature.
Although marshmallow root is generally considered safe to use, you should still talk with your healthcare practitioner before consuming.*

I have several issues. I’ve been drinking marshmallow for the last couple months, which just last week, I’m sure a stone passed as it went down the ureter there was pain. Which if marshmallow can get in, it can help stones pass. It has also relieved prostate symptoms. The biggest thing, after eating food it seemed to stay in a position that affect my heart and lungs where I couldn’t get a full breath and my heart would speed up. Then bigger than that, constipation and diarrhea alternated with loose bowels being a blessing as hard bowel movements caused a terrible amount of pain and bleeding. Butt would scab together, then feel like it’s tearing open. For last few years going to the bathroom has been seen with dread. Then bleeding doesn’t do much for ones confidence. Where my doctor tested with Cologuard. But using marshmallow root, it keeps things normal. I know there’s still problems there as missing out on marshmallow there’s an internal pain going on outside of colon that goes to pelvic floor.
Yet, I drink regularly. Pharmacies should carry it as it is something that at least treats the symptoms. Which I’ve had problems not being able to pass fluid and other things. The colon is supposed to regulate fluid as well as other parts of the body. But like now, my foots are swoll up from edema. Which is not correlated to some suspicious meds. I say that as some see a side effect of a med can do that and they with simple minds like simple answers. Which I have not used one particular med at different times, so I, note I, have positively ruled that out. Lord I get sick of the simple minded always acting like they’re intelligent.
But I’ll assure you, marshmallow root helps with a lot of things.
For stones, Lilly of the valley aloe Vera gel helped too, though something is still lodged in my pelvic waist area which can be seminal tubes or ureter and other things. Walmart brand didn’t do squat!!!!!😠😠😠
Joe Pye Weed and Chanka Piedra are said to help break up stones. Joe Pye Weed is also called gravel root. Probably from gravel in the urinary tract. I would guess Marshmallow root simply makes it easier for gravel to slip and slide. I think I saw somewhere the hops in beer can help by dilating the ureters helping stones pass.
Anyway, that’s it.
