Elderflower is a powerful herb and shares many properties with the delicious berries that form once the flowers fall off the elder tree (elderberries). It's been used for centuries for it's immune-supporting properties. Elderflower tea or tinctures are often taken during the cold and flu season as they may have anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties.
Elderflower cordial is such a great way to get the immune-boosting properties of elderflower in a delicious and versatile way, and makes a perfect summer addition to lemonade, cocktails, or simply mixed with sparkling water and simple syrup for a refreshing soda. Here's our most delicious and simple recipe:
Ingredients
- 2 cups white sugar
- 2 cups water
- 1/4 cup dried elderflowers
- 1 Meyer lemon
- ½ teaspoons citric acid powder
Directions
-
To first make simple syrup, bring sugar and water to a boil over medium heat until the sugar dissolves (usually within a few minutes). Remove from heat and let cool.
-
Slice the lemon and put in a sealable glass jar (like a mason jar) along with the elderflowers and citric acid powder. Pour in cooled simple syrup. Seal. Shake. Store in the refrigerator for 48 hours.
-
Strain mixture through a cheesecloth or fine mesh strainer into a separate sealable glass container. Make sure to press down with cheesecloth or clean hands to extract all the liquid. Store in the refrigerator for up to 6 weeks.
